Start with your current plan

Before signing up for another connection, open your operator’s app and look for the roaming area for your destination. Check the included gigabytes, the price once they are used up, and whether there is a travel add-on. It is not enough for the country to be in Europe: an eSIM’s commercial zone and a roaming zone are different lists.

When each option makes sense

If your current plan includes enough data at the destination, using it may be simplest. A travel eSIM lets you separate your internet budget from your usual line and choose a destination-specific plan. A local physical SIM is another option if your phone does not support eSIM; check identification and installation requirements before deciding.

Compare the total cost

Note the duration, high-speed data allowance, the speed after that allowance is used, tethering availability and included countries. Divide the price by the number of days you will actually travel, not the maximum duration of the plan. For a short getaway, a long-duration plan may be less competitive even if it includes more data.

Two lines, two setups

When using a travel eSIM, check which line has mobile data assigned and disable automatic switching to the usual line. Calls and SMS from the latter may incur separate charges. Save the instructions before leaving and check the settings upon landing.
