How to make cheap calls from abroad using apps
Learn how to call from abroad using WhatsApp and other apps, keep your number, and distinguish internet calls from calls to landlines and mobiles.

QUICK ANSWER
To call from abroad, you can talk between app users over Wi-Fi or mobile data. To call a landline or mobile that does not use that app, you need a service supporting calls to telephone numbers and must check its rates. A data eSIM provides internet; it does not itself include voice minutes.

| You want to call… | What you need | What to review |
|---|---|---|
| A WhatsApp contact | Both with WhatsApp, connection, and calls available. | Data consumption and availability of the feature at the destination. |
| A landline or mobile through a compatible app | A service for calling phone numbers, such as Viber Out. | Calling credit or plan, country, number type, and total cost. |
| A number through your phone’s dialler | A line with voice service. | That line’s roaming rate applies: it does not automatically use the data eSIM. |
1. Call between users with internet
If you both use WhatsApp or another calling app, you can talk over an internet connection. Before leaving, check that the app works, has microphone permission and keeps you signed in. Make a test call. Availability of app calls may vary by country, network and service.
2. Keep your WhatsApp and choose the eSIM for data
You can keep your WhatsApp account number while using another line for internet. Select the travel eSIM as your data line when you want to start the plan and check automatic switching. Reinstalling the app or verifying the account again may require access to the registered number; arrange that access before travelling.
3. To call a hotel or a landline, check the type of call
Calling through WhatsApp is not the same as dialling any phone number on a booking. Some services support calls from an app to ordinary numbers. For example, Viber Out requires the caller to have internet and a calling plan or credit; the recipient can answer a phone call without internet. Check current rates and the destination number before paying.
4. Calculate the full cost
Add the data plan, any app calling credit and all costs of your usual line. An internet call uses data: it is not free if you pay for that connection. Audio calls usually need less data than video calls. Avoid universal megabytes-per-minute figures; usage depends on the app, quality and connection conditions.
5. Distinguish the call button from the app
For an internet call, start it inside the chosen app. The phone’s normal dialler may use the voice line and incur roaming charges. Do not assume your operator’s Wi-Fi calls are free abroad either: they have their own conditions. Check incoming calls, outgoing calls and voicemail prices beforehand.
6. Prepare connection to talk outside the hotel
If your usual plan does not include enough data at the destination, we recommend considering Mundi eSIM for your apps during the trip. Check the country and phone compatibility in the catalogue. Current regional plans offer 28 days from first use and 10 GB per day at full speed, followed by reduced speed; conventional calls and SMS are not included.
7. Bring an alternative for important situations
Save the accommodation phone number and address and agree with your contacts on a common app. A calling app does not replace an emergency phone service. If you need to receive codes by SMS, keep access to your usual line and check its terms: those SMS messages do not reach the data eSIM.
Frequently asked questions
Can I call Spain with WhatsApp from another country?
You can call other users when you both have a connection and the feature is available at the destination. Usage is charged to the connection you are using.
Do I have to change my WhatsApp number?
You do not need to change it to use a travel eSIM’s data. Keep access to your account’s number in case the app asks you to verify it.
Can I call any landline with Mundi’s eSIM?
The plan is data-only. To call a landline number, you would need an additional service that allows it or a voice line, with its own rates.
Are video calls included in the eSIM price?
They use the plan’s data if the app and network support them. They are not included voice minutes and may use more data than audio-only calls.
