What is a data eSIM?

An eSIM is a SIM profile installed digitally on a compatible device. You do not need to insert a physical card to add the plan. A travel data eSIM gives you mobile internet under the selected plan’s countries, duration and limits. Not every eSIM is for travel or data-only: those features depend on the plan.

What international data is for

They let you use maps, check bookings, request transport, send messages or browse abroad without Wi-Fi. An international eSIM may cover one country or several destinations. “International” does not mean worldwide coverage: explicitly check every country and stopover where you want to connect.

The difference between eSIM and roaming

Roaming or itinerancy is the use of a network other than the usual one to obtain mobile service. An eSIM is the digital way to install a plan. They are not opposite concepts: a travel eSIM can also use roaming networks. The commercial decision is whether you will use roaming on your usual tariff or contract another data plan for that trip.

When to compare your usual tariff with a travel eSIM

First check whether your operator includes the destination, how much data it allows and how much it charges when you run out. If you already have enough included data, another plan may not be necessary. If the destination is outside your coverage, compare roaming bundles and the eSIM by total cost, duration, speed and countries. Do not assume that all European countries have the same conditions or that a commercial region is equivalent to a roaming area.

How purchase and installation work

The planned process is to choose the destination and an available plan, check compatibility, complete payment and receive a QR code with instructions. It is installed with a stable connection following the manufacturer’s steps. Before scanning it, check when validity starts: installing, activating and starting to use data may be different moments depending on the product. In Mundi eSIM, the contract remains closed while we complete the service setup.

Do I keep my number and WhatsApp?

A data eSIM adds a connection but does not itself change the number registered with WhatsApp. You can use messaging apps over your selected data line. These plans do not include conventional calls or SMS. Check the costs of keeping your usual line separately, especially if you need verification codes or ordinary phone calls.

What phone you need

The device must support eSIM in its exact variant and be free of carrier lock. Check the model and purchase region with the manufacturer, as well as the options that appear in settings. Do not buy based solely on the fact that another phone with a similar name is compatible. The QR and activation codes are private.

What to compare before paying

Check included countries and territories, duration, start of validity, activation deadline, full-speed data, subsequent speed and internet sharing terms. Check the final price, available support, and withdrawal and refund rights. Current Mundi eSIM catalogue plans last 28 days with 10 GB per day at full speed, then reduced speed. This duration does not mean all providers or all eSIMs work the same way.

How to avoid charges on your usual line

Select the travel eSIM for data, follow the provider’s roaming instructions and disable automatic switching if you do not want to use the other line’s data. Your operator’s calls, SMS and voicemail keep their own terms. Ships and planes may use networks different from terrestrial ones; do not assume they are included.

Choose the plan for your trip

For a short break, compare the full price with your expected days of use. If you visit several countries, check the whole route, not just the first stop. Read the Europe+, Americas and Africa plan details, check your phone and save the instructions before leaving. You do not need to buy more data than you will actually use.

Activate it within 90 days of purchase

Install and activate your eSIM before travelling, using Wi-Fi and following your order instructions. You have up to 90 days from purchase to activate your eSIM. Your 28 days of service begin with the first use of data. If your home country is included and you use data there, the plan may start before your trip. The activation window does not add days of service.
